In a recent University of Colorado Health
Sciences Center study of more than 4,500 adults,
those who ate or drank more than 74 grams of
high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) a day—that’s
about 2½ cans of sugary soda—had a 36 percent
greater risk of high blood pressure. HFCS makes
up more than 40 percent of sweeteners used in
beverages and foods today.
The American Heart Association recommends
reducing intake of added sugars from any source.
For a fizzy summer treat, mix 100 percent fruit juice
with an equal amount of calorie-free club soda.
