A Fresh Start
When Lupe Green, 53, learned she was
at high risk for a heart attack, she started
making heart-smart changes. Instead of
guzzling three 2-liter bottles of soda a
day, she now opts for water, and she has
replaced watching TV with daily walks.
This on-the-go grandma shares her
tips for living a heart-healthy lifestyle.

Accept the challenge. Lupe joined a 10-week heart health makeover program sponsored by her local chapter of the American Heart Association. “I challenged myself to meet my goals,” Lupe says. With er positive attitude and the help of the program’s trainer and dietitian, she won the challenge, lowering her total cholesterol by 100 points and losing 2 inches around her waist.
Pace yourself. “Look at it as progress, not perfection,”
Lupe says. “It’s going to take time to develop a plan
that works for you.” Lupe went from being inactive to
gradually adding three days of walking to her routine.
Now, she jogs and walks six days a week.
Find inspiration. Lupe’s 15 grandchildren keep her
active and motivate her when she feels like giving
up. When Lupe overheard a grandson say, “Nana is
strong!” after seeing her jogging in the park, she was
encouraged to keep making healthy choices.
Follow a schedule. By shopping for groceries every
Sunday, Lupe incorporates fresh produce into her
weekly meal plan. She uses an indoor grill to prep
chicken breasts for the rest of the week.

Track progress. Keeping a food journal helps Lupe
stay organized. She also jots her daily exercises,
cravings, and even emotions. “If I cheat, I ask myself
why,” Lupe says. “I write how I feel after eating.
I’m changing my thinking and behavior—it’s a new
lifestyle.”
